Meet Dr. Trivellas on National Women's Health Day 2023

In honor of National Women’s Health & Fitness Day on September 27, 2023, we would like to introduce one of Hoag Orthopedic Institute’s surgeons, Dr. Myra Trivellas, sports medicine specialist. Dr. Trivellas shares more about her practice, common sports injuries in women and how they can protect themselves from being injured.

Q: What made you interested in becoming an orthopedic surgeon?
A: When I was growing up playing sports, I developed an interest in health and performance as well as fixing things with my hands. Also, being meticulous has helped.

Q: What inspires you in your practice?
A: My active patients who are eager to learn about their body and get back to an active lifestyle are what inspire me most as a surgeon.

Q: What are the most common injuries you see as a sports medicine surgeon?
A: Rotator cuff tears, ACL tears, meniscus tears, hip labral tears from FAI, shoulder labral tears from dislocations, patella instability are the most common injuries I see as a surgeon. Patella instability occurs more often in women though, which is why I focused my research on this topic.

Q: What are some ways women can protect themselves from injuries?
A: Women can protect themselves from injury by ensuring they have the proper jumping and landing mechanics. Cross training, strength and balance training are important as well as proprioceptive training, like the FIFA 11+ training program. Healthy eating and balanced diet is also beneficial to protecting and strengthening your body.

Q: What are a few tips you'd like to share with everyone in support of National Women's Health & Fitness Day?
A: Find a consistent exercise routine that you can commit to- that works with your schedule. And then make it happen. Don’t give yourself a choice to exercise or not- just build it into your habits and routine.

Q: What's something you want your patients to know about you as a doctor?
A: Hard work and discipline is always the right answer.
