HOI Ranked 18th Nationally, Up from 28th Last Year, in Orthopedics and “High Performing” in Hip Fracture, Hip Replacement, and Knee Replacement

Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI), one of the largest providers of orthopedic care in the nation, has for the first time been nationally ranked in the top 20 best orthopedic hospitals in U.S. News & World Report’s “2023-2024 Best Hospitals” list. In addition to this distinction, U.S. News has also recognized HOI as “High Performing” in Hip Replacement, Knee Replacement, and Hip Fracture for 2023-2024. Its 18th national rank is up from ranking 28th in last year’s report.

“HOI is deeply honored to be listed in the top 20 of nationally ranked orthopedic hospitals in the nation in U.S. News & World Report’s best hospitals list,” said HOI CEO Kim Mikes. “Our national ranking as a leader in the delivery of high-quality musculoskeletal health care, and our place in the top 1 percent of orthopedic hospitals for the last five years, is a testament to the dedication of our physicians, clinical staff and team members who consistently provide exceptional orthopedic care to the communities we serve.”

The annual “Best Hospitals” rankings and ratings, now in their 34th year, are designed to assist patients in making informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions, or elective procedures. With more than one million Americans receiving joint replacements each year, and millions more receiving other orthopedic and spine surgeries, those in pain can use these rankings in identifying the highest performing hospitals and physicians.

The methodologies used in most areas of care for the 2023-24 U.S. News rankings and ratings are based largely on objective measures such as risk-adjusted survival and readmission rates, volume, patient experience, patient safety, and quality of nursing, among other care-related indicators.

“We applaud U.S. News World & Report’s efforts to improve transparency in health care and are confident that these rankings will help consumers who need musculoskeletal medical services make informed decisions about their care,” said Steven Barnett, M.D., chief medical officer of HOI.

HOI, the highest volume provider of joint replacements in California, has received consistent recognition from various publications and health care organizations for its patient-focused services since opening in 2010, including topping the U.S. News Best Hospitals List in 2022-2023; 2021-2022; 2020-2021; 2019-2020; 2018-2019; 2017-2018; 2013-2014 and 2012-2013.
