Why I Ride Series: Steven Barnett, MD

Why I Ride Series: Steven Barnett, MD

Leading up to the inaugural Back to You Bike Ride Presented by Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI) in partnership with OC Wheelmen on November 18, HOI doctors, staff and supporters are sharing “Why I Ride” and the importance that road cycling has to them.

Steven Barnett, MD, HOI Chief Medical Officer and Orthopedic Surgeon shares that his interest in cycling started during his total joint fellowship training.

“I played basketball for exercise but sustained 2 separate knee injuries both requiring arthroscopic surgery, so I needed to find an activity that was lower impact on my joints. Cycling provided that,” Dr. Barnett shared.

Now, Dr. Barnett adds that cycling is his main source of cardio training today and enjoys the community aspect of cycling, including with his fellow HOI teammates.

“We have a dedicated group of physicians and employees at HOI that hold informal group rides from the hospital on weekends as well as participating in organized century rides around California,” Dr. Barnett said. “A great local ride that we’ll do on occasion is to start at the Irvine Metrolink station and ride down to Oceanside through Camp Pendleton then take the train back.”

Dr. Barnett is leading the charge for the upcoming inaugural Back to You Bike Ride starting at HOI, and invites the community, patients and people of all ages to join the fun.

“I’m most excited about being able to share this cycling event with our patients who had an orthopedic condition that limited or prevented their future cycling activities and were able to return because of treatment they received through HOI and our doctors.”
